To me portraits are simply observing people in their moment of Self-Awareness. A moment when someone is feeling open and vulnerable. When they are in communication. Expressing a piece of themselves to the outside world. I believe when people face the camera they are really just facing themselves. So in a way they are having an unspoken conversation with themselves, and sometimes, express things that are hidden. Things that you wouldn't normally perceive.
The Family Portrait
Family is the root of all my work. It is where I come from and what I have become. Learning the dynamics of a family through the lens of the camera, being able to observe the combination of characters make for a very interesting and playful experience. Families are the nucleolus of society. Each family is unique and different. I enjoy the process of studying the interactions and energy of families, as together we share and capture these special moments in time. Each special individual that completes the whole, each one with their own imprint on the collective. I approach each subject and project as a part of myself, as a part of my family.
Each couple holds a unique dance. A different expression of energy, that is their love. An idiosyncratic signature, which is a projection of their relationship. I am honored to be a part of these intimate moments of togetherness, as a mirror, as a silent witness behind the camera. To share in one of the most beautiful moments of being a human being. When one shares themselves with a companion. When someone feels loved. I truly appreciate the trust to be allowed to come into a space and moment of a couple's life to document an expression of their love. To capture this beauty that is overflowing when they are close to each other. To see the light and feel the warmth of that fire.
The magic of wonder is nearly always present in the eyes of a child.... They are the character and embodiment of purity, of selfless awareness. The spontaneity of a child has the ability to not only bring out the spontaneity in us, but also to touch and bring forth the inner child within ourselves. I enjoy the challenge to record these amazing moments of magic through the art of the lens. To have the opportunity of looking in a child eyes and laughing with them allows one to let go and also enter that space of innocence. Children are naturally loving and trusting, they are open and willing to express themselves wholly and without inhibition. Children are often the best mirrors, they have the ability to speak the unfiltered truth. They are the best teachers because they so us who we are.
The highest expression of the feminine form can be witnessed through life creating life. To acknowledge the sacredness and fragility of this time of introspective waiting. The anticipation of the arrival of an infant child, a human being into the world. To be able to stand in stillness during these moments of sensitivity and vulnerability with the up-most respect and care, in full awareness through the camera is my goal. I enjoy the process of documenting women in a time when they are in their full natural power of creativity. The simplicity and beauty of what it is...
There is no limit to the diversity of lifestyles which we, as human beings, have become entangled. As a species we must be the most diverse on the planet. There are so many versions of a life, manifesting spontaneously and habitually with each passing moment. As individuals, our very lives are the embodiment of that living design which is us. Made up of and crafted out of our many beliefs, ideals, and backgrounds. I enjoy the mystery of touching that through the lens. From a simple moment of interaction with another or to the complexity of our very character.
Photographing babies can be a wonderful challenge... Discovering the details takes dedication. One must work with great patience and care, with the gentleness and openness. I feel that one of the most interesting aspects is knowing that one day these children will grow into young men and women, and that these images will serve in some way as a testament of their first steps into this world. The photographs will forever hold a special moment and space in time not only for the mother and father, but the generations to come. Capturing the beginning of the journey and documenting these delicate moments is a joy to me. To be a part of the process and to experience the happiness of a parent in their adoration for their child. Knowing that I am able to be a part of this unique time is a very exciting thing.
It's amazing how an image can stimulate us in such a strong way. Through the image so much is transmitted. A communication is opened with all the sensations. The natural colors, the textures. One can even sense the aromas and flavors of food through the art of photography. You can almost taste it! Each dish or concoction with the unique signature of it's maker. Even sometimes food carries the story of it's origin, the reflection of the culture and people who cultivated the ingredients and dreamt it's vision
Testimonial / Documentary
Documenting real life scenes, in context, in the environment of a person. Capturing those subtle moments of the routine. A person in their natural flow of life. A place where one spends many moments. Discovering the fluidity that a person has when they are in their zone. Working their craft, or acting with intention on a goal. Ultimately, understanding the simplicity of this aspect of ourselves, and that we are not so different from each other.
Behind the scenes
Collaborating in union with others to reveal the many pieces of a puzzle. Allowing for the world to discover that magic that is behind, before, and beyond. Revealing the process, a part of the road that was paved in between. It's extremely fulfilling to be trusted to document these moments of creation with the Visionaries who have been inspired to create them. Capturing a little bit of the pain and the glory of those dreamers whose sweat, blood, and tears brought forth an expression of themselves, whether it be an event, a project, work, a process, a gathering, we are all artists of life. Having a part in the process of strengthening the platform through photography becomes a piece of whole as important as any. Collaborating with them to introduce their medium to the world is a great honor.

Animals are extremely fun to photograph. The excitement of both the owner and the animal is something really enjoyable to me. Animals have very unique personalities, just as humans. I find it is very interesting to see how much a like a pet's personality can be to their owners. Pets become more like family members than just a pet. Although I cannot confirm whether or not a pet can fully understand what we are doing, they still feel the energy and are willing to open up for the camera and express themselves in the funniest ways. Fins, feathers, paws, and claws you name it, it's always a wild time.
"Chief" is a ongoing creative serious born out of my passion for cultural objects and sacred instruments. These objects are timeless works of art that carry with them the echoes of a culture, a way of life, and perhaps the perspective of that time. For different indigenous peoples around the world, the objects of sacredness may vary greatly. For the original people of the Americas animals were seen as relatives and communicators with the divine. To wear or adorn oneself with feathers was considered to connect spiritually with the energy of the bird and carry the power of the what it represented.
